South Africa faces AGOA standoff as Ramaphosa eyes reset with US

The US removed South Africa from AGOA, a trade deal giving preferential market access. Officials say trade continues, and President Cyril Ramaphosa sees a chance to reset ties.

Washington removed South Africa this week from the African Growth and Opportunity Act, known as AGOA. The deal gives eligible sub-Saharan African countries preferential access to the US market.

The removal followed mounting tension between the two countries over a range of policy disputes.

South African officials say exclusion from AGOA does not mean trade with the US will end. President Cyril Ramaphosa sees a chance to reset strained ties after the Democrats' strong midterm election result.
