Malawi and Mozambique act on fuel supply strains

Malawi faces a nationwide fuel shortage, and Mozambique's government says it is taking steps to ease supplies. Fuel costs affect household budgets and business activity.

Fuel supplies are running short across Malawi. The Human Rights Defenders Coalition has warned of protests in every part of the country unless Energy Minister Jean Chifuniro Mathanga resigns or is removed.

The minister has said the root cause is the country's persistent shortage of foreign exchange, meaning the hard currency needed to pay for imports. That diagnosis is not new.

In Mozambique, Estevão Pale, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, told Parliament the government is carrying out several measures. They aim to normalize fuel supplies, ease import constraints and limit the effect of energy costs on households and productive sectors.
