Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy said two oil tankers caught fire after hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz. One was in the eastern part of the strait and the other in the strait itself, it said.

The IRGC said the vessels were trying to use an "unauthorised route." It said they had turned off navigation and identification systems. After hitting the mines, it said, they caught fire and stopped in the water.

“The Strait of Hormuz is closed by God's grace and the efforts of the IRGC Navy, and there will be no change until the seven conditions are met”

The IRGC said the strait is closed and will stay that way until seven conditions are met. The statement came amid wider Middle East tensions and US-imposed blockades.

Separately, Iran confirmed that Iraqi ships are exempt from its restrictions on the strait. That lets them pass through the key waterway despite continuing disruption. Reports of the exemption also linked it to rising oil exports.
