Greece's parliament has approved a tax law covering cryptocurrencies. It sets a 10% levy on individual investors' crypto gains. The tax takes effect on January 1, 2027.

Annual gains of up to €500 are exempt. The law is the first comprehensive framework in Greece for taxing digital assets. It also adds separate rules for staking, crypto lending and income from decentralized finance, or DeFi, which means financial services run on blockchains rather than banks.

Staking means locking up coins to help run a blockchain in return for rewards. The headlines on the law say staking and DeFi income face a 15% rate. Further directives on transparency and audits have not yet been issued.

The final 10% rate is below the rate in the earlier draft. For Greek crypto holders, the law ends a long period of unclear tax treatment.

What comes next

Directives on transparency and audits are still forthcoming.
